If you think this country is going to get better then you don’t know how bad things are. If you know how bad things have become, if you know how deep corruption has eaten into our lives, you will know that this country can never get better.
Do you know that some teachers now rig class captain elections? You don’t? Now you know. People are shot dead over SUG elections. People are killed over NANS aspirations. And you think solving Nigeria’s problems is as easy as allowing the youths to take over? What youths? Our generation? We are the worst!
Only a revolution can rescue this country. And no, it is not a political revolution where another group takes over. It is not a revolution where your pastors and Imams take over. It is not a revolution where we have the first female president. It is not a revolution where you give the youths a chance. It is not a revolution where you take power and hand it to theoreticians and masters of marxist ideologies whose brilliant dissecting of political realities have not transcended the pages of books. It is not a revolution where you elect the NLC president or TUC president and say “power now belongs to the people”.
No, it has to be a bloody revolution. And I am not even talking about the possibility of it happening or the possibility of people rallying behind such a treacherous idea. I am saying, possible or not, it is the only way.
There are people that as long as they continue to breathe, they will continue to carry weight. As long as they are alive, the youths will continue to rally behind them and define them and their political direction as the only way. There are people that as long as they continue to pull weight, they will continue to hold political conferences where they bequeath their political ideologies enmeshed in corruption and theft to the next generation.
There has to be a revolution and it is a revolution that after it has swept through, things can no longer remain the same. It is a revolution that must stretch the nation to a point where it can no longer return to normal. It is not a revolution that will change political gladiators and party names; it is a revolution that will uproot this system.
It really is the only way. What is the alternative? Join politics and change the system from within? Show me two people who joined politics and successfully changed the system from within. This system is designed to flush out revolutionaries if they manage to get there.
If you had any ideas about changing the system and you try it out by seeking to contest, you start losing your way before the party primaries. If you manage to scale through the primaries, you have compromised some of your ideals already because to even win, if you had any strong aversions to bribery and “settling” people to vote for you, you will compromise that.
By the time it’s time for the main election, you can no longer remember why you joined in the first place. All what’s on your mind is how not to lose after spending so much. And so you bow even lower and bend your morals more and cook up more excuses to assuage your conscience.
By the time you win, if you win, you have compromised so much that you no longer know how not to compromise. You have bent so low that you can no longer define what ideals mean. And so, like the ones before you, you get swallowed up by the system.
In no time at all, you are asking people what they want. You are editing your bio and replacing words like “non conformist”, “revolutionary”, “change agent” with words like “astute politician”, “political colossus”, “political genius” and your speech no longer feature words like “the masses”, “do all we can”, “we will not fail”, instead, words like “we politicians are not magicians”, “go and die”, “no work no pay” now slip out smoothly.
The system, this system is designed to take men of morals who join, chew them up and spit them out, broken men whose identities have been wiped off. Those who join and insist on enforcing change get disgraced and thrown out. Their names and reputations get rubbished. They become pariahs. They become enemies of the political class that spit them out and can no longer identify with the masses whose interests drove them to join in the first place.
A revolution; a bloody revolution is what is needed to purge this country. Whether you think it is possible or not. Whether you think the people can stand up to end this system or not. The truth is that it is our only way
